The Best Treatments For Psoriasis

A skin condition that can be unsightly, painful, and very embarrassing for those suffering from it, psoriasis afflicts millions of people in the U.S. and around the world. Fortunately, as medical researchers have learned more about psoriasis, numerous treatments have been created to help patients control it or, in some cases, virtually eliminate it. As to the best treatments for psoriasis, here are some that offer plenty of promise to patients.

Corticosteroids

The most common method of treating mild to moderate psoriasis, corticosteroids, are topical therapies that often produce excellent results. In ointments, creams, lotions, gels, and even oils and shampoos, corticosteroids are commonly used on a person’s face, skin folds, or other sensitive areas of their bodies. For most people, this topical therapy is applied once per day during flare-ups and on alternating days when the condition is in remission.

Light Therapy

According to Oxford Online Pharmacy, light therapy is becoming a much more common psoriasis treatment option for people with moderate to severe psoriasis cases. It is used as a first-line treatment; light therapy is usually combined with prescription medications to make it more effective. Also known as phototherapy, patients use either natural sunlight or various types of artificial light. If a sunlight regimen is used, patients should always work closely with their doctors to ensure their exposure to sunlight is as brief as possible.

Laser Therapy

Technically another form of light therapy, laser therapy, has been used on patients and yielded good results. Using what is known as an Excimer laser, a doctor will use an intense UVB light to target an affected area of the person’s skin. Laser therapy requires far fewer sessions than traditional phototherapy, which has some side effects, the most common being blistering and inflammation.

Oral Medications

When oral medications are used to treat psoriasis patients, retinoids such as Acitretin are almost always the most common ones prescribed by doctors. Usually available in pill form, the most common side effects patients experience while taking these medications are muscle soreness and dry skin. However, this medication will not be an option for pregnant women planning on getting pregnant or breastfeeding their babies.

Biologics

Biologics are injected into the body, which helps treat psoriasis by altering patients’ immune systems. Sounds drastic and potentially dangerous, biologics have generally resulted safe and effective. By altering the immune system, biologics disrupt the psoriasis cycle, letting patients see significant improvements within a matter of weeks. It is used for moderate to severe cases of psoriasis, and biologics get used when other initial treatments have failed to yield positive results. Common biologics used include Otezla, Enbrel, Humira, and Remicade.

A frustrating condition that comes and goes, psoriasis can significantly impact people’s lives. However, as new treatments are being discovered and fine-tuned to be used on patients, it is thought that today’s psoriasis treatments are the precursor to one day finding a way to make psoriasis disappear for good. So, before getting into any medical treatment for psoriasis, you must research to know better about your condition. Consult an expert to advise you on the correct treatment, which can yield fruitful results.
